Welcome, all to December, the month of the year that is full of joy, festivities, holidays, and of course, the best and most recognizable Christmas tunes in the world! It is not a secret to anybody, that Christmas albums and specials are quite lucrative for famous recording artists, and that Mariah Carey has been the #1 example since her 1994 Merry Christmas album, featuring “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” However, even though we love and respect Mariah, there is another artist that has been able to surpass her Christmas reign on streaming platforms and consolidate a “low profile” reign through the years, the Canadian Michael Bublé.
As soon as December 1st hits the calendars, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” becomes the anthem of yet another December. Only in Spotify, Mariah Carey’s top five songs include 3 Christmas tunes, and her top song “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is about to reach 570,000,000 all-time streams.
After the peak day, Mariah’s Streams decrease by almost a million on December 2nd, but the graph already shows a tendency to increase the numbers as December 24th comes close.
The Real King?
Even though he is already a Christmas icon (and a Christmas meme in social media), most of the people out there do not know that Michael Bublé surpasses queen Mariah by millions of streams almost every year since 2015*!
In his top-five songs in Spotify, Bublé also has 3 Christmas tunes from his 2011 “Christmas” album. His top hit is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” followed by “Holly Jolly Christmas,” and the famous “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” Even though his top song is reaching 280,000,000 (compared to Mariah’s 560 million), the following songs accumulate 151 million and 119 million, respectively, and that is what separates both artists’ success.
While Mariah Carey is commonly known for her mega-hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” and she has established herself as the Queen, Michael Bublé has multiple Christmas hits close to and beyond 100 million streams. Bublé’s Spotify Top-10 has 7 Christmas tunes, while Mariah’s Top-10 has 5 Christmas tunes with significantly lower stream counts.
King and Queen
When it comes to Christmas music, there is no doubt that Mariah Carey and Michael Buble are world-wide Royalty. Besides their “normal” repertoire, their Christmas albums have rocketed them to stardom and a legendary status having their “own time of the year.” Without releasing any music during the year, these two need to wait some months to start seeing and automatic increase in streams worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Also, let’s not forget that the Holidays bring massive promotional campaigns to all kinds of deals for products in almost all consumer industries. This time of the year is huge for music licensing, and many brands will want to pay the rates of having a Mariah’s or Bublé’s tune for a TV, radio, or online commercial.
