After his exceptional time in the city of Boston, Juan David Peña decided to move his music talents over to the West Coast into the city of Los Angeles. The Colombian bass player, producer, and composer is leaving his mark as he takes the Rock Music scene by storm with his band “Lithic,” his solo project “Escapement,” and his compositions for tv commercials for some of the world’s biggest brands.
The Music Journey
Juan David was born in the capital city of Colombia, Bogotá. Growing up surrounded by music in his life, and it was just a matter of time before he decided to use his electric bass as his means to take over the world and look for higher life passages overseas. That is how, after some time learning in a Colombian music academy, he was able to make the jump and landed in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, to learn and experience music with some of the brightest artists in the world.
Peña wasted no time in getting deeply involved in one of the top music communities: Berklee College of Music, where he spent four years producing, performing, composing, and promoting music. It was during this time that he formed “Lithic,” alongside members Marvin Buessau, Jack Dinger, and Stone Panunzio.
Alongside the Greats
As he kept on learning and working in college, Juan David was able to work with top-music industry professionals in various fields, proving his versatility and extraordinary talents as a musician. Between some of the names, we can highlight professionals involved in GRAMMY Award-winning projects like record producer Rob Lewis. Also, GRAMMY Award-winners Missy Elliot, Justin Timberlake, and Alex Lacamoire were in attendance as special guests for a tribute concert where Peña worked as the playback engineer, production assistant, and recording assistant for the 7,000+ seat event.
Juan David is a regular on-stage and studio musician. Since he arrived in Boston, and now in Los Angeles, he has been eager to connect and participate with local and international musicians in performances or recording projects. To Juan’s music credits, you have to include projects he recorded for Latin Grammy-winner star Noel Schajris, alongside rising Mexican star Marco Mares, and singer-songwriter Nicole Zignago.
He was personally invited by music producer and artist Nico González, to record and be part of the project and artistic campaign “Pa’ Medellín,” a project with national impact directly sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of the city of Medellín, Colombia.
Firm Steps in L.A.
Fast forward to last year, Peña decided to leave the city of Boston and search for higher challenges in the music capital of the West Coast, Los Angeles.
Lithic reunited in Los Angeles in 2019 and since then the band has taken over the music scene performing at some of the most prestigious music rooms in the city just like the iconic Viper Room (where bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Johnny Cash, and The Strokes have performed as well), and the unique Lighthouse Café (that has experienced guest musicians like Chet Baker and Miles Davis).
The band just released their latest single “La La Land.”
Not stopping there, Juan David keeps proving his musical talents and unique relevance in the music industry by also taking over the highly competitive and challenging job of composing original music for TV commercials. Swimming through this business is no easy task, and Juan is demonstrating how a combination of extraordinary talents and love for the job brought him the opportunities to work in the projects to compose tracks for commercial campaigns by Uber, Nike, Audi, Samsung, Apple.
